Who is YS Jagan Mohan Reddy? The Man Who Reshaped Andhra Politics

Few politicians in India have experienced a journey as dramatic as YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. From the grief-stricken son of a beloved Chief Minister, to a political prisoner, to the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh himself — and now to a determined leader in opposition fighting what he calls a “political vendetta” — Jagan’s story is unlike any other in contemporary Indian politics.

Born on December 21, 1972 in Jammalamadugu, Kadapa district, Yeduguri Sandinti Jagan Mohan Reddy is the son of the iconic Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy, who served as Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Minister from 2004 to 2009. When his father died in a helicopter crash in September 2009, Jagan was thrust into the political spotlight almost overnight.

His entry into mainstream politics was rapid and dramatic. After a falling out with the Congress party — which he felt had sidelined him after his father’s death — Jagan founded the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in March 2011. Within months, the party demonstrated its mass appeal when Jagan himself won a by-election from Pulivendula with a massive majority.

What followed was a decade of struggle, legal battles, and relentless campaigning. Jagan spent 16 months in jail from 2012 to 2013 in connection with what his supporters called fabricated corruption cases. That imprisonment, rather than weakening him, turned him into a martyr figure in the eyes of millions of Andhra voters — an image that would prove crucial in the 2019 elections.
